SAVE TIBET, SAVE LHASA

Save LhasaNgawang Sangdrol, a former Tibetan political prisoner, has started a petition to save her home, Lhasa from China's destruction.

Sign the Petition
Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, has stood upon the roof of the world for thousands of years. The old city of Lhasa is a UNESCO world heritage site and the centre of Tibetan Buddhism, culture and commerce.

Now the Chinese government is destroying the heart of Lhasa, evicting Tibetan residents to make way for theme parks, shopping malls, and parking garages.

Ngawang Sangdrol, a former Tibetan political prisoner from Lhasa, has launched a petition to save her beloved city:
 http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/help-stop-the-destuction-of-my-home-lhasa-tibet

Ngawang is asking UNESCO's World Heritage Committee to designate the old city of Lhasa as a heritage site "in danger" at its annual meeting later this month in Cambodia. This would put enormous pressure on the Chinese government to stop the destruction of Lhasa.

Sign Ngawang Sangdrol's petition urging UNESCO to protect Lhasa: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/help-stop-the-destuction-of-my-home-lhasa-tibet

The fact that the Potala Palace and the Jokhang area of old Lhasa are listed on the World Heritage Site is a huge source of pride for China. UNESCO has the power to help stop China's destruction of Lhasa by designating it as a "World Heritage Site in Danger". If Lhasa is listed as a site in danger, the Chinese government will have to stop the construction or face losing Lhasa's World Heritage status, a major embarrassment it wants to avoid.

Ngawang Sangdrol's personal story reminds us of the power of individual actions. At the age of just 13, she took part in a peaceful demonstration calling for the long life of the Dalai Lama and Tibet's freedom. She was sent to prison where she recorded freedom songs with fellow Tibetan nuns, resulting in her sentence being increased to a total of 23 years.

Following an international campaign on her behalf, Ngawang was released in 2002. Now living in the United States, she continues to advocate for Tibet's independence and the protection of its culture and heritage.

Sign her petition to UNESCO and then double your impact by forwarding this link to a friend or family member: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/help-stop-the-destuction-of-my-home-lhasa-tibet
Together, we can join with Ngawang Sangdrol to help save Lhasa.

With hope and determination,

The White Tara Shrine Update
May Lein Ho gives us a short status report on this fabulous project.
Of the 154 White Tara Statues that make up the Shrine for Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche's 90th Birthday:

All the 12-inch Statues are sold.

Five 6-inch statues are still available

Thirty-five 8-inch statues remain.

Donation toward the 24-inch statue in any amount is available.

Suggested: A statue would be a terrific group project for a KTC or other group that has worked with Rinpoche these past many years, and it would serve as a powerful blessing for a group shrine.

"There is no one who better explains what compassion is all about and how to practically implement it in everyday life, whether one is a Buddhist or not. This exceptional book is another pearl in his rosary of writings and a source of inspiration for everyone who wishes themselves and others a better life."

Mahakala and Protectors Statue Filling and Shrine Dedication

KTD has received their Mahakala and Protector statues and are in the process of preparing them for installation in KTD's protector shrine room.

Lama Karma Drodhul describes the scene:
"We are preparing to fill the Mahakala statue and need to do a lot of pujas before we fill it. We have all the Karme Ling Lamas and Lama Tashi Dondup with our Guru Khenpo Rinpoche and Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin. I am hanging in there there with jet lag! May there not be any obstacles for practicing Dharma! Karmapa Chenno!

Lama Tashi Dondup came in to assist prior to teaching 'Death and Our Journey Through the Bardo' this weekend, April 19 - 21.

Earth Day at KTD This Weekend
Robyn Glenney with KTD's New Compost Bin
Robyn Glenney has been a Residential Volunteer at KTD for the past few months. She has returned home but is still interested in helping KTD.

Robyn writes:

Some of you know that I wanted to keep volunteering for some environmental/sustainability projects. As it turns out, this Sunday is the day before Earth Day!
Since KTD has a tradition of raising awareness of the natural environment on Earth Day, we thought it would be great to get people involved and outdoors this weekend.

I am thinking that we can start the main work day at 9:30 after shamatha, but for those attending Lama Tashi's teaching I can schedule a little walk to go over some environmental issues on the KTD grounds and the meanings behind working on them. For those interested in working on something for any amount of time that day, here is an overview of some projects:

By Sunday, I expect it will be finally warm enough for "spring cleaning." If I may paraphrase His Holiness Karmapa in the film "Never Give Up," cleaning up our surroundings allows us to clean up our mind.
I see the old scrap piles behind the kitchen as the first priority to be cleared away. We will shovel out the pile and bring it to the new compost bin to mix with other materials and hopefully make a better home for our decomposers. This will be a huge help to the health and general atmosphere of that hillside.
Also, several areas of the grounds have been tended as gardens, all of which are ready for some clearing and preparation for spring. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to put in some new plantings, as well.
Finally, there are some spots where there is evidence of old projects that were abandoned. We may not get to picking everything up, but especially near the Dharma Path it would be nice to reduce the man-made clutter and clear up some more room for other living things.
Please check the KTD blog at ktdblog.wordpress.com for more on environmental projects.

New Advice:
Dharma is Needed for the Happiness of Sentient Beings

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave the following advice to Ven. Thubten Dondrub, whois resident teacher at Buddha House, Australia and videoed the talk, while waiting for a flight to Hong Kong at Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia.
An excerpt follows – please read the full advice here.
"Good morning, good afternoon, maybe good night! Thank you very much; thank you so much for your prayers for me, for sentient beings, for Buddha, from where all sentient beings receive their happiness.
For sentient beings to have not only temporary happiness – when we say 'happiness,' should not think only temporary happiness, only samsara happiness – don't think [that] – we must think ultimate happiness, liberation from samsara forever, then peerless happiness – full enlightenment.
So when I recite the long version of the Six Session [Guru Yoga], instead of happiness I say 'enlightenment,' full enlightenment, the cause of enlightenment. I change that [word because] it helps my mind to think of highest happiness, true happiness. Just to say 'happiness' normally means temporary happiness, makes one think of temporary happiness. And we have had temporary happiness numberless times from beginningless rebirths.
Why we have the center is to have happiness for sentient beings – to increase, to develop happiness for sentient beings."

Italian Basic ProgramOnline Success!

The Italian-language Basic Program Online offered by Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa (ILTK) in Italy had its first-ever final exam this March. All 10 participating students passed – a huge achievement for all involved! Kind thanks to Basic Program Online tutor Vania Tesser, who provided students with the care, support and inspiration needed to get this far, and many other staff at ILTK who contributed over the course of five years. This is an FPMT milestone: previously we had no homestudy students completing a Basic Program and final exam in any language other than English. Congratulations to all!

Some years ago due to popular request we made available a short informative document on how to relate to the spiritual teacher, written by Ven. René Feusi.
Our wish was that this would help students at all FPMT centers, and most particularly new students, by answering so many of the frequently asked and essential questions on how to properly relate to a spiritual teacher, ensuring that students coming to your center would be well informed and protected from mistakes. We asked you to please display this very informative booklet publically for all to see.
Now we would like to know if you have been finding this booklet helpful. Please let Tom and Claire know, together with any other related feedback. Thank you!

Tushita Mahayana Meditation Centre in Delhi has now hosted 20 Dharma Celebrations with His Holiness the Dalai Lama! The 20th Delhi Dharma Celebration, co-hosted with Tibet House, felt especially meaningful, reports Ven. Kabir Saxena, SPC at Tushita:
"Approximately 4,000 people attended the event on March 9, which was held in front of a beautiful Buddha statue that was sponsored by His Holiness and offered as a gift to the Indian people two decades ago in gratitude for the gift of Dharma.
This year there were about 70 volunteers from Ladakh, and there were also volunteers from Jawahar Lal Nehru University where Tushita director Dr. Renuka Singh teaches. So this means that young people are being exposed to His Holiness and the 'Three Principal Aspects of the Path to Enlightenment,' which was the topic for the afternoon.
Photos from the event show a very energetic and beaming His Holiness and a focused audience who sat through a hot afternoon with rapt attention."
Jade Buddha Benefits Many in Penang
Daniel Yeoh, director of Chokyi Gyaltsen Center in Penang, Malaysia, reports:
"We have benefitted so many people in Penang on just the first two days of the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace [tour], including 1,500 school kids who came in batches of buses. I estimated about 8 to 10 thousand people visiting the Jade Buddha on the second day."

Four Session Guru Yoga by the Eighth Karmapa Mikyo Dorje

Four Session Guru Yoga by the Eighth Karmapa Mikyo Dorje
Commentary by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. US$23.50 - 87 pages

The Four-Session Guru Yoga that we practice, composed by the Eighth Karmapa Mikyo Dorje, was based on an earlier guru yoga found in the writings of Lama Shangtsalpa's (Lord Gampopa's disciple) secret teachings that were sealed by command seal. Mikyo Dorje used this as the basis for his composition, altered slightly by adding a little bit to it.

There is a commentary on this practice written by the Ninth Gyalwang Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje that is impracticably long. Chakme Rinpoche wrote his commentary because until that time there was no easily accessible commentary for doing Four-Session Guru Yoga. Chakme Rinpoche's commentary presents the meditations and visualizations to be done at the various sections of the text. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche's commentary goes through Chakme Rinpoche's explanation of the visualizations first, and then through the text word by word.

Included is the sadhana of Four-Session Guru Yoga by Mikyo Dorje and a CD with Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche chanting the sadhana.
