We've increased our efforts this year to expose the real situation in Tibet, to help Tibetan refugees and political prisoners, and to inspire new champions for the Tibet cause.  And we need the help of all our friends because the facts are grim:

• A climate of fear dominates Tibet. Chinese government policies include torture and imprisonment for peaceful protests.
• Expressing devotion to the Dalai Lama or passing news to the outside world can be a punishable crime. Chinese authorities monitor Tibetan cell phone and internet traffic.
• Tibetans are routinely denied due process of law, even in cases where conviction could end with the death penalty.
• Those Tibetans who risk their lives to seek freedom in exile face a heightened threat of arrest on both sides of the Himalayas, thanks to China's growing influence in Nepal.

That's why I am so grateful to have you standing by our side in defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms for Tibetans.

This is the last known photo of the Panchen Lama before he was abducted by Chinese authorities.

Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, we're only $1,810 away from our $10,000 online Religious Freedom Campaign Goal.

The deadline is Monday, September 20. Will you help us reach it?

Today in Tibet, the most prominent figures of one of the world's oldest and most sophisticated religious cultures face serious threats to their ability to guide their people in wisdom and compassion.

The 11th Panchen Lama - kidnapped by the Chinese government in 1995 as a 6-year-old boy - his whereabouts remain unknown.

The 17th Karmapa - escaped into exile at age 14 because "In Tibet there is religious freedom only in our minds."

And the 14th Dalai Lama - forced from Tibet more than 50 years ago - continues his efforts to end what he describes as a kind of cultural genocide in his homeland.

Chinese government authorities want to lock in political and religious control over the Tibetan people. They are determined to choose important reincarnate lamas who are the great teachers and leaders of Tibetan Buddhism, including the next Dalai Lama!

Our goal is clear:

We must harness the will of the international community to hold the Chinese government accountable for its violations against religious freedom.

This is a fundamental right protected by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which it is bound as a member of the United Nations.

We must ensure that the world responds with one voice: The future of Tibet is for the Tibetans to determine.
