Half-Kitchen and Half-Housekeeping Position: This volunteer position includes Kitchen tasks of preparing vegetarian and vegan meals, washing pots and pans, and cleaning up the kitchen, as well as Housekeeping tasks of cleaning guest rooms and public spaces. Housekeeping Position:  This volunteer position includes cleaning public spaces, guest rooms, offices and storage rooms. In addition, housekeepers do laundry tasks, re-supply the rooms and bathrooms with soap and paper products, and perform other interior maintenance tasks. Being able to do some heavy lifting or physical labor is important. Or phone  845-679-5906 ext 3 or 845-679-5906 ext 1090. KTD monastery is the North American seatof His Holiness Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu Tibetan Buddhist lineage. Located on a mountain above Woodstock, NY, the monastery is across the hiking trail going up Overlook Mountain. KTD offers teachings by Tibetan Buddhist lamas, meditation practices, chanting pujas, and a community lifestyle based on Buddhist principles. People from around the world come to weekend programs and week-long retreats to study genuine Buddhist dharma.    Residential volunteers sleep in Dorm Rooms and receive free vegetarian meals. If their work schedule allows, they can attend teachings by visiting Tibetan Buddhist lamas on the weekends. Residential volunteers participate in KTD's community by doing a daily meditation or puja practice and by sharing other activities that support the spiritual and day-to-day life at the monastery. KTD offers a weekly Introduction to Buddhism course and a weekly Buddhist book discussion group. When Lama Atisha went to Tibet, he was told about all the problems there, Lama Zopa Rinpoche recounted during the public teaching at the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion on September 20, 2014. “Then Lama Atisha wrote a text integrating all Buddha’s teachings into a few pages,” Rinpoche said. “It is called Lamp of the Path to Enlightenment. The text was sent to India to be checked. The pandits were so surprised. At that time if a text had mistakes, they would tie it on the tail of a dog and it would be taken around the city. At that time they did like that, but they were so surprised that Lama Atisha had integrated all Buddha’s teachings in the three pages of the Lamp of the Path to Enlightenment, the graduated path to enlightenment — the name started from this text — so graduated path of lower capable being, graduated path of middle capable being, and graduated path of higher capable being. So all the Buddha’s teachings are in those three, embodied in the lam-rim, the graduated path to enlightenment. “The graduated path of lower capable being, oh, that one is to not harm others, that instruction goes: do not harm others. Then the graduated path of middle capable being, oh, that teaching is also to not harm others, mainly it is to not harm others. Now the teaching of graduated path of higher capable being is to benefit others. So lam-rim, what Lama Atisha wrote, all the Buddha’s teachings comes down to not harming others and benefiting others. The right view of Buddhism is dependent arising and the action is to not harm others. That is included in Lama Atisha’s teachings, everything is included there: to not harm others and to benefit others.” You can watch a video of this teaching on FPMT’s Livestream page. Shamatha is calm-abiding meditation, while vipassana is analytical meditation in a step-by-step approach.

Combining the two helps us to avoid obstacles to meditation such as hopes, fears and low self-esteem.

In this retreat, we try to gain some experience of the union of luminosity and emptiness.

Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche

On 24 August 2014, His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche with entourage arrived at Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat and was welcomed by the traditional elaborate ceremony which was conducted by Rinpoches, Khenpos, Lamas and Sangha of Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat. His Eminence was directly invited to the main shrine hall of the main monastery and His Eminence paid homage to the Lord Maitreya statue inside as the central figure of the main shrine hall and golden relic Stupas of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa and 11th Tai Situpa. Subsequently, His Eminence sat on the throne and all the Sangha and devotees received his blessing. After the blessing, His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche met Guru Vajradhara Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa in the audience room and the traditional tea ceremony was served and they spent some time together as always, it being an utmost wonderful moment.
