Chaksam-pa Tibetan Dance and Opera Company seeks financial support for a first ever presentation of a traditional Tibetan Opera (Ache Lhamo) in the United States. The Bay Area Tibetan community has grown to encompass approximately 1,500 people and three generations. The creation of cross-generational events that sustain and celebrate their rich cultural heritage, comfort the aging and teach the young, becomes ever more important as this exile community ages and evolves. The traditional Tibetan Opera is a daylong event with the opera performed outdoors under a large tent. In Tibet, entire families, from infants to grandparents, would attend in their best traditional dress, bringing picnics of their favorite foods and thermoses of butter tea and barley beer to visit with friends and family and wander in and out of their favorite parts of the opera at will. Chaksam-pa’s presentation of Tibetan Opera will be a unique opportunity for the entire community to enjoy the whole Tibetan opera experience, an ancient tradition that in its authentic form is now rare in Tibet.
We have started a fundraising project on kickstarter.com, to raise the money needed for the upcoming Tibetan Opera performance, October 22, 2011, to be held at Craneway Pavillion in Richmond, California.
