Dear tso peme ling I'm excited to share an update with you from my first 100 days as SFT's Executive Director. I'd also like to introduce our international staff team who are working around the clock and in multiple time zones to challenge the Chinese government at the highest level.  Our small but dedicated leadership team includes Pema Yoko, our Deputy Director who hails from London and is currently working with me in our New York headquarters; Dorjee Tseten, our Asia Director based in the Tibetan-exile capital Dharamsala, India; Padma Dolma, our Campaigns and Europe Director based out of SFT's new London office; Urgyen Badhyetsang, our Canada and Creative Director based in Toronto; and Tsepa Bayul, our Communications and Development Director who has been with us in the New York office since February.  We feel truly honored and privileged to serve the Tibetan people, our freedom movement and SFT's youth membership at this time. Learn more about our staff team and don't hesitate to contact us today. In the past 100 days, we've gone head-to-head with Chinese leaders at the UN, trained students and youth in seven countries, and made sure our elected leaders are speaking up for Tibet. And although the challenges facing the Tibetan people are grave, we know our work together is moving us – and all Tibetans – towards a victorious end to our struggle. Read more about our accomplishments and actions for Tibet. Visible public action for Tibet is critical this year as China's new leadership is doing everything in its power to erode political support for Tibetans and His Holiness the Dalai Lama internationally. In the next 264 days, SFT will meet face-to-face with government leaders, take on Chinese officials, organize in the streets and classrooms worldwide, and mentor and activate the Tibet movement's future leaders. Securing our independent past:  On the 2nd annual Tibetan Independence Day, we shined a spotlight on Tibet's history by commemorating the historic Tibet-China Treaty of 821-822 AD. We are marking this significant day to secure Tibet's independent past in order to shape our future of a free Tibet.  Spotlighting Tibet and shaming China at the UN: Our UN lobbying efforts peaked at China's Human Rights Review at the UN Human Rights Council Session in Geneva in March where China was made to answer for its atrocities against Tibetans. We ensured Tibet was a spotlight issue at China's ultra-controversial review through high-level meetings with over 20 UN member states.  Educating and activating young people worldwide for Tibet: Since January, SFT has trained over one hundred students, activists and youth in the art of non-violent direct action, media advocacy, digital activism, campaign strategy, and grassroots organizing in Poland, Belgium, Canada, Taiwan, India, the UK and the USA. Building the international profile of Tibet's imprisoned religious leaders Khenpo Kartse and Tenzin Delek Rinpoche: When Khenpo Kartse was arrested in December 2013, we launched an emergency petition and raised his case with over 20 UN member states and governments. In April, Canadian MP Peggy Nash presented the petition to the Canadian government, calling for action. In April, SFT teamed up with Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's family to renew calls for his release as he marked his twelfth year in prison. Lobbying in nation's capitals for Tibet:  In March, together with other Tibet groups, SFT organized Tibet Lobby Days in Canada, the UK, India, the USA and Europe in an international effort to bring world leaders together in a united international response to the crisis in Tibet. Thank you Kate! After eight years of dedicated service to SFT, Kate Woznow has stepped down as International Director. She has made an invaluable contribution to SFT and to the Tibetan cause - from building SFT's international grassroots network, to chasing down three generations of Chinese presidents around the globe, and helping to master-mind the 2008 Beijing Olympic protests. A Message from SFT's Tendor about the Enough! Campaign Watch the Video

Her strong public statement at the APEC Summit on November 10th calling on China to review its hardline policies in Tibet sent a clear message to Tibetans that their cries for help are being heard.
Since the launch of the Enough! Campaign for Global Intervention to Save Tibetan Lives, Tibetans and supporters worldwide have been working to secure this kind of high-level political support for Tibet. Now, we need to redouble our efforts.

On Monday, SFT released rare footage smuggled from Tibet to the international media. The extraordinary video shows Palden Choetso's self-immolation and the overwhelming reaction by the Tibetan community in response to her ultimate act of nonviolent protest; over 10,000 Tibetans attended a candlelight vigil on the morning of her funeral. Tibetans in Tibet need a reason to hope. They need to know their desperate cries for help are being heard around the world and that our leaders are taking action to hold the Chinese government accountable.

1. Send a letter to UN High Representative Catherine Ashton urging her to Stand up for Tibet.
2. Follow-up your letter with a phone call to your elected representatives's offices to request a face-to-face meeting to discuss with the the human rights crisis in eastern Tibet.

4. Sign and share the Avaaz Petition to Save Tibetan Lives. The goal is to deliver 1,000,000 signatures to world leaders by December 10, International Human Rights Day.

Dear Mike,

Last week, at a United Nations reception in New York, I had an unexpected opportunity to speak with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a central figure in the struggle to end apartheid and racial discrimination in South Africa.

I had entered the event in order to hand a letter to the Nepalese Prime Minister, urging him to protect the lives of 23 Tibetan refugees at risk of being sent back to Tibet, and seeing Archbishop Tutu's iconic smile was a welcome sight.

He had just given a powerful speech about advancing the rights of women and children. As he was leaving the reception, smiling and waving to the crowd, even giving high fives to those who stretched out their hands, I greeted him with a khata and introduced myself.

Upon hearing the word Tibet, his eyes lit up. Then, shaking his head in what seemed like a mix of expectation and frustration, he said, "I really hope my government will have the courage to let the Dalai Lama visit our country."

He was referring to his invitation for His Holiness the Dalai Lama to attend his 80th birthday celebration next week, and his fear that the South African government might cave in to China's pressure and refuse the Dalai Lama a visa.
In 2009, South Africa denied the Dalai Lama a visa to attend a peace conference because of Chinese government pressure, a move condemned by many South Africans and people of conscience worldwide.

One can reasonably assume that China's long arm of oppression is a factor in South Africa's decision to delay His Holiness's visa announcement. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has been in Beijing this week for bi-lateral talks. 

The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu are loved and respected by millions for their tireless work for peace, justice and humanity. The two men share one of the greatest friendships in history.

As the Archbishop turns 80, the South African government should honor this leader whose vision and moral force have helped the country achieve its freedom. It would be simply criminal for President Zuma to stop these two Nobel laureates from meeting in a country that for many Tibetans is physical proof of the power of nonviolent action.

The Tibet support group, South African Friends of Tibet, has been advocating for His Holiness's visa at the government and civil society level. Now, they've asked for global support.

CHINA: STOP THE ATTACKS IN TAWU

Another town in eastern Tibet is under siege - and your help is urgently needed.
Thousands of Chinese soldiers armed with tanks and cannons have locked down the town of Tawu, and at least three Tibetans have been arbitrarily arrested. 

China’s attacks closely follow the self-immolation and tragic death of 29-year-old Tibetan monk, Tsewang Norbu, from Nyitso monastery in Tawu County (Ch: Daofu) in Kham, eastern Tibet. All access to and from the monastery is being tightly controlled by armed troops.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the petition demanding an end to China’s assault on Tawu and for the release of those detained.

China's leaders are trying to block the world from witnessing its crackdown in Tawu. Help stop the campaign of terror by shining a spotlight of scrutiny on China's top officials. The repression in Tawu must not go unnoticed.

Further Actions You Can Take for Tibet:
The reports of monks trapped and fearing for their safety in Tawu are strikingly similar to calls for help from Kirti monastery in Ngaba earlier this year. Following the self-immolation of another young monk, Phuntsok Jarutsang, Chinese troops laid siege on Kirti monastery in April resulting in a month-long standoff with the monks and local residents who peacefully resisted the attack.

Just two days ago, Phuntsok Jarutsang’s uncle, also a monk, was sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment. Two other monks also received lengthy prison sentences for trying to protect Phuntsok.

Please take the following actions to alert your government to China's campaign of terror in eastern Tibet.  Your actions can help stop more innocent Tibetans from being targeted. Helpful talking points are included below.

1. Call your Embassy in Beijing and politely request your officials to express their grave concern about China's crackdown on Tibetans’ basic rights in Tawu and Kirti.
   
2. Call your Foreign Minister/Secretary of State’s office to alert your government to the urgency of the situation in eastern Tibet, including the harsh sentences handed down to monks from Kirti monastery.
   
3. Organize a solidarity protest at the Chinese embassy or consulate nearest you or at a public landmark in your community. Please let us know if you are planning a protest by emailing us at grassroots@studentsforafreetibet.org.

Reminder: Tell the World Gold Council Tibet's Gold is Conflict Gold

Tomorrow, September 1st, is the deadline to submit feedback to the World Gold Council (WGC) on its plans to remove "conflict gold" from the market. The WGC is the leading authority in the gold industry, and its decision presents an opportunity for us to help stop China's exploitation of Tibet's resources.

The WGC has asked for feedback from the public on what standards it should use to certify newly-mined gold as "conflict-free." Let's ensure all gold from Tibet is classified as conflict gold by writing to them today, before the deadline!

In Tawu, eastern Tibet, following the solo protest of Tsewang Norbu on August 15, thousands of armed Chinese troops entered Tawu county. Three Tibetans from the Tawu region, Norbu from Rinah Lungpa village, Gyaltsen from Nyeshap village, and an unidentified Tibetan were arrested between August 19 and August 22 on unspecified charges. Their current whereabouts remain unknown. Tawu region continues to be under an intense security clampdown. Read more:

On August 29, Lobsang Tsundue (also known as Drongdru), uncle and teacher of Phuntsok Jarutsang was sentenced to 11 years in prison after a one-day trial held in the Ngaba TAP Intermediate Court. According to Chinese state media, he was charged with "intentional homicide" for trying to protect his nephew after he lit himself on fire. His whereabouts remain unknown. Two other monks, Tsering Tamding and Tenzin, were sentenced to 13 years and 10 years imprisonment respectively, for "plotting, instigating and assisting" in the self-immolation of Phuntsok. Since Phuntsok's self-immolation, Chinese military and other security personnel have been stationed in the Ngaba area and Kirti monastery has been under lockdown.

China Gold International Resources is the overseas arm of China Gold Group Corp – one of China’s largest state-owned mining companies and a company that has been operating in Gyama (Chinese: Jiama), near Lhasa, Tibet, for a number of years. The company has recently listed on the Toronto and Hong Kong stock exchanges and is trying to finance its operations with foreign support.
In 2009, Tibetans in Gyama protested the contamination of water resources and the resettlement of nomads as a result of the mine operations. Tibetans clearly do not want this mine. By stepping up the pressure now, we can help stop China Gold and other foreign companies from profiting off Tibetan lands.

Clamp down in Tibetan schools after fresh language protests

Radio Free Asia reported on November 24 that authorities in Kanlho, Gansu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture have stepped up surveillance in Tibetan high schools following a small-scale protest in support of Tibetan language in schools over the weekend. Local Tibetan sources said that a group of two or three students walked for about a mile, carrying a white banner and shouting slogans calling for independence of Tibet. Missing Tibetan writer traced to detention center in Barkham County

According to a report by Radio Free Asia, noted Tibetan writer Tashi Rabten (pen name: Theurang), arrested on April 6 and missing since then, is being held at a detention center in Barkham County, Ngaba Tibet Autonomous Prefecture. Sources said that authorities have not allowed family members to visit him but allowed delivery of food and clothes. It is believed that Tashi might be tried soon but little is known of what the charges might be.  Read the complete story . . .

U.S. State Department releases 2010 International Religious Freedom Report

The U.S. State Department released its annual International Religious Freedom Report on November 17.  The report stated that the United States continues to be concerned for the preservation and development of the Tibetan people's unique religious, cultural and linguistic heritage, and the protection of their fundamental human rights.  The report also found that the Chinese Government's control over religious practice and day-to-day management of monasteries and other religious institutions continues to be extraordinarily tight.  Read the full text of the Tibet section of the report . . .



EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT:

European Parliament adopts resolution in support of a genuine bilingual language policy in Tibet

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on November 25 in support of a language policy in Tibet in which all subjects can be taught in Tibetan language. The resolution was passed during a plenary session and a press release issued by the European Parliament said, "MEPs urge the Chinese authorities to support a genuine bilingual language policy, in which all subjects can be taught in the Tibetan language. They condemn the increased crackdown on the exercise of cultural, linguistic, religious and other fundamental freedoms of the six million Tibetan people as well as the Chinese authorities' plan to make Chinese the main language of instruction in Tibet."  Read the complete report . . .

Dear Tso Pema Ling We're excited to share with you the news that Tibetan writer Kalsang Tsultrim was released from Chinese detention on Oct 15th, following his arrest in July for distributing a video message calling on Tibetans to unite in action. This follows reports that Tibet's leading intellectual Shogdung was also released last week, pending trial. Although they are still being monitored by Chinese authorities, their release is a clear victory for all Tibetans inside Tibet who are bravely speaking out for their rights. We thank each and every one of you who took action to help secure their release. We urge you to continue pushing for the release of other Tibetan political prisoners.
